FAQs

Question 1: What is the Internet Academy?

  • The Internet Academy is a flexible way for students to earn their college degree. There are lots of reasons why traveling to our campus on a daily basis is not possible, yet the need for completing a college degree quickly is important. Through the Internet Academy, you can start one of several Associate Degree programs in the Fall and complete it within two years - without the need to travel to our campus. With the Internet Academy now available, there may not be any reasons left why you can't get your college degree.

Question 2: What is an Internet-based course like?

  • You can take an Internet-based course from the convenience of your own home. All you need is a computer and access to the Internet. These courses are taught by qualified and experienced HCCC faculty using an "asynchronous" format - which means there are no regular sign-on times required. Each student logs on the course at convenient times to discuss issues and respond to questions posted by the professor and by other students. There are no classes on campus to attend - ever!

Question 3: Do I have to be enrolled full-time to take an Internet course?

  • No. Any eligible student can take our Internet courses. If you are a high-school Junior or Senior, or if you are working full-time, or if you live too far from campus (or for a million other reasons why coming to campus regularly is inconvenient or impossible) then Internet courses are perfect for you.

Question 4: Is an Internet course a "real" college course?

  • Absolutely - Yes! Just like a traditional college course, you might have discussions of important issues, mini-lectures, writing assignments, term papers, small-group assignments, tests - any or all of these. Just like traditional classroom teachers make decisions as to what activities to schedule for their students, so do the faculty of the Internet Academy.

Question 5: Won't I miss the face-to-face interaction with the teacher and the other students?

  • This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get, and the answer might surprise you. On-line courses are often much more "personal" and socially rewarding than classroom-based courses. Why don't you read what some of our current Internet Academy students say about this?

Question 6: How is the Internet Academy accredited?

  • As an integral, and mission expanding , component of college operations, HCCC's Internet Academy enjoys full accreditation through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Higher Education. For further information about accreditation, contact the Internet Academy Office at HCCC (www.ia.herkimer.edu) or the Middle States Association (www.msche.org). In addition, the New York State Education Department has named HCCC an approved provider of Distance Learning Programs.
